july 27 Maddie Gash :

 Maddie Gets Huge Gash

  Photo Or Photos Below

JULY 27TH Dropping off one of my clients: Hank the wheaton pup, maddie got loose and someone had left a huge gate open.. Maddie must have chased something : a deer or coyote.Pitch black, very steep hill with boulders and jagged old fencing, trash, fallen tree limps above Cedar Lane right near Dog Park, across from 9A North on/off ramp. I was screaming and calling for her, heard animal fighting sounds, heard maddie right near me somewhere barking but she couldn't get to me. Drove down drive way to Cedar Lane below, drove along slowly calling her name, on 2nd pass , she appeared out of the bushes along side the road, covered in muck. Drove back up driveway, Hank ( my client)'s house, getting her inside : big drops of blood, threw her in shower, could finally see where the bleeding: two big deep gashes on back of right front lower leg. Wendy Of Guiding Eyes and Pam of moby, jet, faith, sarah came right over : wendy brought lots of wound dressing materials: she brought big 'ol Max her black Lab who's dying of cancer with her and Leila the beautiful future guide dog puppy who romp and rolled with Hank. Pam held and comforted Maddie as Wendy dressedthe wounds. Decided to wait till next day for vet. I had to go spend the night with Polly and Charlie the king cavelier spaniels, 1st time ever alone with someone else, Charlie a desperately shy spaniel. Maddie, Me, Charlie, Polly managed to sleep through the night all 4 of us curled up on the bed. Vet said : much better to keep it open and let it heal that way : no stitches. He clipped the hair away from the wounds, and cleaned them with a rough gause pad to abraid the dead tissue: all of this was agonizing for Maddie as we held her still for the doctor. Kindly old guy: Knollwood Animal Hospital : near white plains . She's home now here with me in Yorktown. Sleeping on and off. Starting to use the leg again instead of hopping around on just three. I'll write more soon. Wendy and Pam were just great. Wendy found the vet for me: only $80.00.

MAX (wendy's) :

Max Of Wendy : Tumors

JULY 21ST From Wendy's Facebook posting : " well the news is not good on the type of cancer- it is definately a sarcoma - very aggressive form. Running yet another test as to which type exactly (arrgh- you'd think if you've already spent thousands of dollars they could have figured out exact type a thousand ago) - life expectancy without chemo is a couple of weeks at best. With treatment average life is around 6 months- but it would be mostly a good 6 -."

JULY 15TH Just Horrible. Lab results On Max's Tumors. Malignant. Tumor on rear leg : very aggressive. From Wendy's Facebook posting : " the news is very bad - 2 internal tumors are malignent and the leg has an aggressive sarcoma .... Seeing oncologist tomorrow 10am at the animal speciality center in Yonkers. Hope there can be some hope to be had."

JULY 11TH
MAX visited yesterday with Wendy & little guiding eyes foster : Leila. You can see where his leg was shaved for the biopsies in some of the photos below.

JULY 10TH
* Very Bad day for Max & Wendy. Max suffered through many tests and biopsies. Bad, Bad news: the tumors have spread to his abdomen. Three Large Masses. Results next Wednesday or Thursday. Might only be a few weeks left if all are malignant. Wendy is devastated. Max is only 8 years old. Already has cost her around $1,500.00 for just these texts. We're gonna have to have some kind of fundraiser: Wendy is the patron saint of canine care at the park, Max : her stalwart com padre. BELOW IS A PIC AT THE HOSPITAL TODAY

JULY 9TH
* Tomorrow : Friday July 10: Max goes for tests and X-Rays to see if the Tumor is involved with the bone, and if it has spread to his lungs or not.

JULY 7TH
* Wendy Got the biopsy results today. It is a cancer in his left rear leg. Most likely it's in the bone too. If not in the bone, they can just cut the tumor out; if also in the bone - which they think it is - then his leg will have to come off; Friday: x-rays to see if it has spread to his lungs; if so, just horrible. Let's just go for Max months from now chasing after a ball on his three legs. Many dogs do just fine that way. Will cost a lot of money ; so some sort of fundraiser is planned. Ideas ?

* I was at the Best Friends hospital today and took these pics while they waited for the results.

JULY 6TH
* Waiting for the results of a biopsy. Oh.... hope this all works ot. Wendy really loves this big ol' wonderful guy.

DIESAL IN HOSPITAL : NOVEMBER 15 :

Thanks everyone for caring about Diesel. He was in the hospital for 3 days with IV fluids. He did not get to eat at all as they were trying to give his pancreas a
rest. Yesterday they fed him a 1/4 cup of food and there was no vomiting. For now there is a diagnosis of pancreatitis. He is home and tired but happy. He appreciated eating this morning!

He was also seen by a dermatologist who said he has 3 different types of skin infections, and needs to be bathed 2x a week, have his wrinkles and in between his toes cleaned every day. And he has to take 3 different antibiotics/ medicines 2x a day for a month. To cap this extravaganza off she suggested a tail amputation as apparantly it grew the wrong way and this will cause problems in the future. I asked if this should happen before or after the surgery he needs for his cherry eye!

He came home with a 3 vials of medicine, prescription dog food, prescription shampoo, prescription wipes, a note to get Pepsid, 4 pages of diagnosis and instructions, and a bill for $2700, but we still love him.
____________________________________________________

NOVEMBER 12 :

Got this eMail from Lynn of Pugsly & Diesel. Last night nov. 12. Sad, she just lost the wonderful old bulldog Spot. http://dotfur.smugmug.com/gallery/5658617_kkMQF
I'll keep in touch. Diesel just seems like such a great young guy.
Marty,

Diesel had been sick for a week with constant vomiting. The vet took x rays and blood and urine tests, but everything was negative. She recommended an internal medicine specialist at the Yonkers Medical Center. Took him there this morning and they are keeping him for 2 days. Might be his pancreas (good news) or may be his esophugus ( bad news) or kidneys (worst news). His doctor seems incredibly competant (better than human doctors) so I have faith they will find what is wrong with him. (could it be the crab apples stuck in his esphogus that he steels and swallows before I can fish them out of that big mouth?)
Anyhow he is on IV "resting comfortably" they say. I have only had him for 3 months and already he has had a host of health issues. Hopefully we can get them under control. I am very sad.
This photo of Pugsley and Diesel was taken last week. Although Pugsley still cannot believe I brought this monster in the house, he is obviously starting to adapt.
Lynn

OLIVER PAW HURT : Marty,
Hope you, Maddie and Cathy are doing well. We wanted to give you an update on Oliver as you are his biggest fan and Maddie was his personal trainer. Last Thursday Oliver scraped his foot at the park but didn't show any pain until Friday night. We treated it but Oliver licked it for many hours at a time and it swelled up and got infected. We took him to the vet last night and it is wrapped up tight and he is on some antibiotics and anti-inflammatory drugs. He won't return to the park for another week or two. Just wanted to let Maddie know that her boy is okay.

We are attaching some pictures of the injured pup.

FINN (aneurism) JUNE 2 : Last week, Finn (Finnigan) suffered what I've heard was an embolism. His back leg is not working but he does have feeling it. He's going somewhere in Connecticut for the best care and rehab. I'll try and find out more. Finn was a major star of the park awhile back, everyone watched him grow up from just a wee ungainly pup. Chris and Jen the owners finally found they're own house in the Brewster area so we haven't been seeing Finn and his home-sister Josephine as much as we use to and would like. Like I said , I'll stay up to date on this. Few dogs have been as beloved as Finn back when he was regular here. Poor Chris and Jen ; they must be just devastated. **** UPDATE**** JUNE 4 ***** Heard that FINN IS IMPROVING ***** Was a t vet, vet turned around, and there was Finn standing on all fours. Leg was trembling though. Going to big time, top shelf rehab today -june 5- up in Connecticut. JUNE 17 UPDATE : heard that FINN was standing on all four legs for awhile recently.

BAILEY (the younger) IS BACK : Bailey (of Mike & Renee) out for a short while with "puppy warts" aka canine viral papillomas. These clear up pretty fast. Mike & Renee just keeping him from the park out of consideration for others. Bailey is one of "THE BOYS," a bunch of young male dogs between 6 months and a year and a half that play together. Oliver/australian shepherd, Marley/australian shepherd, border collie mix, Bailey, Bud/bull terrier, Baxter/australian shepherd, Eubie/rottweiler, Blackjack, Bubba/boxer, Reggie, Leo/pomeranian, Bobo/american eskimo. I can never remember all of them. They seem to have some affiliation with 2 of " THE GIRLS " , Lucy (pitbull) & Maddie, and also love to wrestle with Lola the bernese mountain dog. Leo, a pomeranian, is the newest member of the " THE BOYS ", Reggie - the youngest and probably not yet official, Eubie - a rottweiler - the largest. Charlie the dingo like dog may also be in this "club, " I'm not sure. Also BOBBY the australian shepherd pup, son of Dallas.

Confined to back deck during dark now. Also, sleeps with me and / or Cathy more than she ever did before. Still not scratching stitches yet so : no weird cone around her head..............
.......... Though at first I thought it must have been a possum - 'cause that got said by people in the waiting room of the 24 hour animal hospital - it doesn't really look like a possum. Looks exactly like a MUSKRAT. The woods out back of our yard are wetlands, and there are little lakes nearby - for instance Lake Mohegan about 1/4 to 1/2 mile away, might be very small streams out there. MOJO (heartworm) IS BACK : December. Mojo has heartworm, which is rare for a dog who CONTINUED INSIDE....... has been on heartworm meds all along (as she has). Anyway, it's annoying, expensive, and once she starts her treatment in a week or so, she can't exercise, so you won't be seeing us for a while...unless we come to the party (without Mojo, of course). We'll have to send you photos of Mojo stuck in the house, looking depressed. :(

Hope all is well. Enjoy your holidays!!! :)

PENNY (peagle) FINE feb. 3 : Hi Marty,

Long time no see! I wanted to let you know Penny hurt her foot a while ago and has since healed, but the doctor advised against going to parks with woodchips until her foot is completely heeled. She was running around at the Pleasantville dog park and somehow broke her nail. She bled a........... She was quite miserable and misses going to the dog parks but hopefully she will be up and running soon! Hope you and Maddie are doing well!

Candice

Hi Marty! Penny's much better now, but I've been going to the Pleasantville dog park lately. Once the weather is warming, I plan on coming back to Ossining though!

Jan. 7 MOCHA OUT FOR 6 WEEKS : MOCHA, the small pitbull puppy. got stepped on by one of the way larger dogs. This was on January 7, big dog's a pup (tweener) himself but a ton. Mocha's owner didn't wast a second snatching her up and racing to the vet. So, hopefully, she wasn't in pain any longer than possible. Has a broken elbow, and will be ... CONTINUED INSIDE ... out of action for about six weeks. Vet expects a 100% recovery but still - I figure this is a lot worse for a puppy still figuring out the world than for an older dog. Rare but frightening and heartrending incident. Photo of Mocha in her pink matching cast was sent to me by the owner. VERY gracious of them too bother keeping us informed. I guess we could send "get well soon " type cards and whatever. I'll try and find out. There are two similar Mochas at the park : the darker, older ( 1 yr.) go-go-go MOCHA is extremely more than fine. HERE'S NOTE FROM OWNER : " Dear Marty, Mocha's knuckle in her elbow was crushed and completely detached from her leg. She had surgery yesterday and is on her way to recovering. The Vet expects a 100% recovery in about 6 weeks. Attached is a picture of her.

Thank you for concern. Best, Vito Moyla "

SKYE BIOPSY DEC. 10 FINE : DEC 10.... 6 : 26 PM skye is home. :)))) had a large growth removed on his foreleg ... he will have a cast on his leg for at least a week, so no dog park. had to get a neighbor, john, to help me bring him up 20 steps to my apt. now, for sure, I AM MOVING! THANK U JOHN! JUST IN THE NICK OF TIME! Tomorrow, he should be able to navigate the steps when he won't be as drugged up. he's pretty woozy now. Biopsy results by friday, and he has to keep taking antibiotics and pain pills. Vet thinks it should come back benign, but the incision makes it a difficult recovery b/c of the location. Thanx for caring!
DEC. 10 , 2 : 30 PM biopsy results will be back at end of week.looks benign; prelim. blood work, ok.had a bath, too! wearing a splint on his leg for about a week or so ... dog park???? probably have to wait a while. :((((( t x for caring! DEC. 8 , 7 : 25 PM skye update: he has a mast cell tumor on this left front leg. could be nothing, could be something. having a biopsy on mon. w/ results not for a week. say a prayer!

Lexxi hip dyplasia BETTER : Hi Marty of Marty & Maddie,
This is Denice and Rick....Lexxi's (silver lab) parents. We're sorry to have missed building of the wind shed and the first snow of the season. Our concerns with Lexxi's hind leg didn't result in an ACL tear, as speculated, but instead we've found out that she has hip dyplasia. CONTINUED INSIDE........ .... Believe us, we would now take an ACL tear in both legs to the dysplasia but unfortunately it doesn't work that way. After X-rays, a consult with an orthopedic surgeon and countless hours researching the disease, options and whatever it takes to fix her right now it's imperative that she not "beat her hips up". We immediately implemented a stricter diet, several vitamins several times a day and glucosamine tablets. We have consults with an accupuncturist and a hydrotherapist this week. We didn't want to house with a pool, but we guess everything happens for a reason as the doctors all say that water is a wonderful form of excercise without doing damage. Too bad we can't open the pool until spring!
The good news is that all Lexxi wants to do is a play and we make sure not to say "PARK" even by accident in her presence or she runs to the front door and starts crying! Lexxi misses the park so much and we miss taking her there! Hopefully, after the six months downtime she's been relegated to, she will show a marked improvement and we will all be back. If not, we will continue to do whatever it takes to get her back there as soon as possible.
She doesn't seem to be in any real pain but she does show signs of sitting and laying down avoiding the use of her right hip and she still bunny hops when she starts to run around when she's let out in the yard to go to the bathroom. It kills us to have to tell her stop and bring her back in the house when she does this because she wants to play so badly!
Anyway, we wanted to check in and let you all know what was going on and why we've been absent from the park.
We hope that everyone, pets and parents, are all well. Please extend our wishes to everyone for a Happy Holiday Season!
Best regards,
Rick and Denice

SERGIO Home Sick IS BACK : Got this note today (Oct 9) about one of the sweetest dogs in the park. Came to a dogpark for the first time when he was 13 years old. Just settles down and as you can see in the photos totally enjoys all that goes on around him. "Just a note to say Hi and let you know Sergio is missing coming up to the park. He ...(((CONTINUED INSIDE)))).. has been sick for the past couple of weeks -- diahrea. Went to the vet and had tests that came back negative for parasites, etc. He is very health for a dog his age (going on 14) but maybe has IBS. Oh joy!

He is on atibiotics and special diet -- paoched chicken and rice. I had no regular rice so he has been eating chicken risoto or chicken and imported jasmine scented rice! He is glad he is sick to get this epicurian delight!

As soon as he is better we will be back. We are looking forward to seeing everyone.

CHARLIE 4 Month Girl Recovering, Back At Park : Update Oct 17 . Charlie was back at the park today; demonstrating her enhanced scampering abilities. She's on a medication that treats her stomach contractions.. After the course of medication , hopefully she'll be fine..... PRIOR POSTS : I heard from John ( park President ) tonight that Charlie -perhaps the {CONTINUED INSIDE}................ world's most charming pup - has been very ill for the last week, All John knew was that it was " something internal, " and she is hooked up to a lot of tubes, IV, etc. I'll try and find out more. Meanwhile, I heard that any ideas on donated vet services ( she is a rescue ) or suggestions about where Charlie might get the best care would be helpful. eMail me here, or the OSSINING DogPark Website.
